Benefits of Early Exposure To Coding

A child’s brain absorbs information like a sponge. That’s why it is important that parents supply children with a wide range of experiences. Around 5-6 years old, kids are highly curious and imaginative. They seek challenges and new ideas. It is crucial that they have adequate resources to learn as much information as possible at this time especially when it comes to coding.

The Brain

The brain is at the peak of energy consumption at about age 6. At this age, children also have a heightened ability to carry out the primary function of the brain: to process and transmit information. It is suggested that around this time children learn how to code. Youth who are exposed to coding at this age have enhanced skills such as creativity, problem-solving, math, and writing.

The benefits of learning how to code increase the younger a child is when they are introduced to it. For example, children later on in life may find it easier to pick up on another language as coding is a unique form of communication itself. It also boosts brain activity which plays a part in positive behaviour development.

Studies with Coding

Throughout 1991 to 2017 there were numerous studies conducted on coders and others who engaged in brain-stimulating work. It was found that these types of activities reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and other degenerative intellectual conditions.

In 2014 there was another notable study organized by various academic institutes around the world. The research concluded that coding exceptionally exercises the cerebrum lobes of the brain. This part of the brain is divided into four different parts: frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital. Each one serves a different function. Coding increases memory, application, focus, logic, and language skills. It is also a great way to improve problem solving skills and overall brain health.

Due to coding being so brain-stimulating, it will surely burn excess energy in children too! STEM Camp is excited to bring coding to your child. With Virtual STEM Camp, there is unlimited opportunities for learning and fun! Our sessions this week are full but we have availability in the coming weeks.
