LEGO Volcano

Get ready for a science experiment and some engineering all in one activity!

Here’s what you’ll need:

LEGO pieces
Baking Soda
Red food colouring (optional)
White vinegar
Baking tray
Spoon
Bowl

Step 1

Make a LEGO pyramid with a hole in the middle. To do this, make a large base and then stack legos around the outside perimeter. For the next layer, make it smaller by attaching legos to only half of the base. Check out this YouTube video for more help:

Step 2

For the top layer, turn the very middle piece upside down. Turn it so it doesn’t fall through the hole in the middle. This piece is going to be the spot for your experiment!

Step 3

Place your LEGO creation on the baking tray.

Step 4

Pour a spoonful or two of baking soda into the upside down lego piece. Don’t worry about making a mess! It will add to the eruption!

Step 5

Mix half a cup of vinegar and a few drops of red food colouring in a separate bowl.

Step 6

Pour the vinegar mixture on top of the volcano. Try to hit the baking soda filled LEGO piece.

Step 7

Watch the volcano erupt!

Step 8

To try this experiment again, repeat steps 4-7!

The STEM Behind The Fun

The “lava” from the LEGO volcano creates a foamy texture as the result of a chemical reaction. The baking soda is a base and the vinegar is an acid. When these two substances are mixed, carbon dioxide is produced. The “lava” foams because of the bubbles that are created when that carbon dioxide forms.
