This week we are learning about Accountants! A background with a STEM education would be highly beneficial to anyone planning to pursue this career. The competition is high so it’s important to set yourself apart in the job pool!
Many certifications are needed in order to achieve an average accounting position at any size of business or firm. The minimum education requirement is a bachelor’s degree in accounting, or related field. Along with that, a recent graduate will need to study for their CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam. Anyone with these two credentials would have a good chance at landing an entry level position. It is common that employers might also require a certain number of hours experience in the field. These can be earned through a co-op or intern position prior to graduation.
After attaining a degree, Accountants typically go on to specialize in a certain area of accounting. They start by choosing one of two general areas: public or business accounting. Each of these sectors have sub-specializations that may include: environmental accounting, internal auditing, accounting & taxes, forensics and so on.
Some other important certifications that should be obtained by an accountant are CFA (Certified Financial Analyst) and CMA (Certified Management Accountant). These credentials will help to broaden the opportunities and skills of any accountant.
Currently, there is a growing demand for accountants in Canada. In addition, the position has the perk of having many opportunities for advancements. With the right kind of networking and experience, accountants often find themselves eligible for promotions or receiving new job offers from client companies.
