March 8th, today, is International Women Day. There is so much to say about how much better the world is simply because women are in it. However, we are STEM Camp. And we will focus on how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are advancing because women contribute on a daily basis to improve and develop STEM.
Did you know that in 2016, Canada had the most females graduating in STEM fields than ever before? This is great news that we must celebrate. There is still so much to be done since the market is still dominated by men, but we are taking steps towards gender parity, equal opportunities and the advance of STEM in our country.
Last year we wrote weekly posts about women in STEM, Canadian women whose lives and work were devoted to improving the lives of others through discoveries and advances in their fields. Names like Elsie MacGill, Imogen Coe, Julie Payette were a few of the women we spoke about and you can share their stories with your children. Real world super hero stories that can inspire and encourage girls.
There is also an interesting project developed by photographer Natalia Dolan, where she focuses her lens on women in STEM. She believes this project can inspire girls and highlight the great work many women are doing. “Exposing women leading in STEM is a huge help in terms of conversation and awareness. It’s about showcasing a diverse and inclusive list of women that little girls can see themselves in,” she said.
You can check out her work HERE.
Finally, the biggest heroes of STEM and every field in the world: Moms. If there is any reason to celebrate international women’s day, if there are achievements in a women’s journey to secure their rights, there are definitely moms behind it.
Women that devote their lives to their professions and also have room in their lives to inspire, care and cuddle their children. They multitask to a level beyond imagination to make sure everything is in order, everyone in the family is alive, fed and happy, and even make time to register their children in their favourite summer camp (which we know is STEM Camp!!!).
We are happy to celebrate International Women’s Day surrounded by so many women that are making a difference in so many aspects in the world, while still making sure they are encouraging their girls to develop their sense of wonder, to be curious and love STEM. We hope our campers pursue STEM careers for their future. If they don’t, that’s ok. All they need to know is that they can do anything they want.
Happy International’s Women day!
